6 Packaging Specs Questions โ€” Answered by a Quality Inspector

You're ordering custom boxes, foam boards, business cards, or flyers for your business โ€” and you're not sure which specs actually matter. Maybe you've been burned before: a batch that looked great on screen but came back looking off, or a material that felt flimsy when it arrived.

Here's a quick calculation: if your image is 3000 x 2000 pixels, at 300 DPI your maximum print size is 10 x 6.67 inches. If you try to print that same image at 12 x 8 inches, your effective DPI drops to 250. That's borderline for most print applications, and the difference in sharpness is visible.

Check before submitting: Open your file properties. Divide the pixel dimensions by 300. If the result is smaller than your intended print size, you need a higher-res file. It's that simple.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think about 40% of the artwork files I review are below spec on resolution. The biggest culprit? Using images pulled from websites without checking. (Better than nothing โ€” but not good enough for print.)

4. What paper weight do I actually need?

  • Not clarifying who pays for a reprint. If specs are met but you don't like the result, that's on you. If specs aren't met, that should be on the vendor. Get it in writing.
  • Ordering based on price alone. The cheapest quote often saves $100โ€“200 upfront โ€” then costs more in reprints, delays, or quality issues. Take this with a grain of salt: in over 60% of my projects, the lowest quote has cost more in the long run.
